I've been using a rubber web product that is sometimes called "bench vise".
It sticks to things, and things stick to it quite well.  It has a fair amount
of compliance, so it should help tame astigmatism on thin blanks.  Using
multiple layers should also work (haven't tried it) for even more coosh.
