This may go against the grain of DIY/ATMers.... The telrad works soooo well that making your own doesn't seem like much of a gain.  It retains alignment between viewing sessions, thre are many chart overlays (both for books and computers) that use telrad circles and builting your own (as well made) won't save much $ compared to other projects.  

Another alternative id the Rigel QuickFinder.  It's similar to a Telrad with a much smaller footprint (and lighter) and a variable pulsing (blinking) option as well as variable brightness.  It uses button batteries instead of the Telrad's two double-As.

Stay away from the Daisy BB gun sights.

I have all three of the above and prefer the Telrad for it's easier viewing, better base and long battery life.  The Rigel is great for small scopes or if weight is an issue.
