Lots of people have gotten their start with 16 inch glass that is 1 inch
thick.  I do not see that 7/8 inch thick is much different.  Aim more for
shallower curve like f/6 so that center thickness is as much as possible.

These plate glass mirrors take a better polish than pyrex, equilibriate so
much faster than thicker pyrex, and are lightweight.  Give it a try and
find out for yourself!
