I have heard of MDF's outdoor equivalent, MDO which uses water-resistant bonding glue and designed for outdoor signs. For scope making this may be a better alternative, if you can get it. Continue to seal everything.

Just out of curiosity, is there any advantage/disadvantage to using medium
density fiberboard over plywood? All I know about MDF is that it is
workable, and is supposed to be reasonably stable.
