ATM Recycling old pitch

Hi.
I've recently obtained some used/old pitch and I would
like to use it to make some small pitch laps.
The stuff is quite hard and shattered and looked like
obsidian when I chipped it off the original tool (40"
tool for 1.8 meter Group-70).

What is the best procedure of getting this stuff ready
for use in a new tool?

Should I strain it? If so, how?

I'm inclined to soften it a bit. How? I've heard
mention of beeswax and also of turpentine.

Any tips on keeping the mess factor low?

Thanks.
-Ralph
