Don, there's a BIG difference between a wood and a metal lathe. I'd have no
fear of using a wood lathe for grinding but a metal lathe is something else.
For reference, there is no surface on the work side of the wood lathe that
would be destroyed by grit while the whole ways and cross-slide of the metal
lathe would be severely worn by grit getting into the various mating
surfaces.
I've even seen wood wood lathes (watch The Woodwright Shop for one which
sits on the right hand area of the shop) and when you can do a lathe out of
wood, it's not really that much of a precision tolerance instrument.
