ATM Quality mirror?
I would like to say thanksto everyone out there who answered my
question concerning thequality of the mirror that I paid for to be
refigured by a comercial mirror grinding company.
When this company recieved my mirror and tested it they reported that
there was a zonal problem and the edge was slightly turned. I asked if
he could correct these
problems and give me a good mirror by refiggureing.
This is whatI had done and then I hadthe interferometric test done to
verify and to docuement the mirror. The total cost was $600 for the used
mirror, $675 for the the refigure, $200 for the interf. test and about
$70 toal for shipping cost. Total cost $1545.
I thought that I was going to save some money by doing it this way
and still get a high quality mirror. I did save about $200 but I ended
up with a modest mirrorI don't think that I will recommend this method
to others.
Many of you who answered me you are correct in saying that I
shouldgetsome descent deep sky viewing are correct and I am going to
havea ton of fun and great pride in building this sacope with the boys.
They are allways great to be with.
I just wish that the mirror was as good as the body of the scope is
going to be.
I will keep this scope with the boysuntil this group gets upand leaves.
I'll then sell it and my youngest son will be in then and I will start
all over again
I know that some of you will not understand this joy of doing a
project with 5 to 8 boy scouts, but try it . There is nothing like
watching these kids solve the problemsand to work on a project like
this. The first time I let them look through the eye piece ofmy Lx200
12" I will never forget. Now they are designing a 18 point mirror
mount and they are starting to build it
