ATM FOCAL PLANE FOUND - THANKS
Thanks to all who offered help. I pointed my scope at the moon, held a
piece of brown cardboard a little above the focuser and voila!! I actually
saw the moon on the cardboard. Can't believe I actually made something that
seems to work. I will wait for my eyepieces before I do anything else.
The focal plane may, just may, be too far above the focuser, because it
seems to me that the focuser will have to be "racked" all the way out to get
a crisp image. If necessary, I will try moving the primary mirror back to
avoid drilling a new focuser hole, which sounds like a good idea suggested
by ATM subscribers. I'm not sure it will be necessary, but out of
curiousity, is it also possible to stretch the get the correct focal
length, without screwing something else up, by making the focuser longer?
Thanks,
Ken
P.S. I enjoy reading the threads of those of you who grind your own
mirrors. I may try that if/when we move to place with more space. As it
is, I built this Dob mostly out of my car, since my wife refused to let me
do it in the living room. She's been out of the country for the last three
weeks so of course I moved all my supplies and tools right in! Am cleaning
up now. Shhh. She'll never know.
