This is all explained in the Kreige/Barry book on building large dobs.
If you are going to go with a dob mount for your 16, I'd highly recomend
you get it. A sling is a non stretch material that goes under the
outside edge of the mirror. This way the mirror isn't directly affixed
to the mirror cell. Because of this the mirror can move. If it
'catches' on the support pads it may prevent it from sliding down to
where the sling fully supports it. That is why some people with this
setup will fully polish the back of the mirror.
