I would think that the first eyepiece takes the image and makes the
light parallel again (that's what an eyepiece normally does), and the
second one focuses it back to an image again for the "real" eyepiece to
deal with. Since the rays are parallel, I would think it doesn't matter
how far apart the two eyepieces are. Caveat, these are suppositions, not
facts.
