Actually, if you have a snorkel more than a foot long or so, the water
pressure on your lungs makes it VERY hard to inhale (water is heavy
stuff).  The concern about blacking out is real, the first thing your
body will do if you black out under water is try to begin breathing
again (not good at the bottom of the pool).
