It is my understanding of comet hunting that most comets are discovered
near the sun.  That means that you can use a type of mount such as a
yoke that does not reach the celestial pole.  A long time ago, I made
such a mount of of heavy iron pipe mounted with a cross joint in the
center.   The whole thing rode on a saw horse with two legs cut off.  It
was as easy to build as a dobsonian mount, and was equatorian and clock
driven.
