ATM Selecting wire thickness

Hi,

I'm still pieceing together Mel's tracking system.  I plan on using
off-the-shelf serial cables for the motor connections; does anyone see
the small-gauge wires as a problem?  

I'll run the wires 2-3' from the board to the motors.  I'm concerned
about large current while ramping motor speed causing insulation
failure, but like the simplicity of cables with molded connectors.
