I refer to plumbers tape as 1" wide (sometimes larger) metal strips with
holes in it.  It is used to connect plumbing to wood by wrapping the pipe
(or whatever) with it and mainling to the wood through the holes.  It is a
metal strip.  If it protrudes far enough, it will work.  If you need to go
further, you'll have to use strapping metal.

If you look at tempered glass, such as the tinted glass that is the back
window on your car, you'll see patterns in it.  If you buy a piece of glass
that has been tempered and try to cut it, surprise, pieces.  It's worth a
quick check first.
