Hi Joe
Yes, it would work without the binoculars. The biggest problem
is pointing such a long distance. As was noted by Ryan, he
can look through one eyepiece and center right on the lamp.
He then knows that the other is pointed right. Also, if the
LASER is mounted near the eye relief distance, you know that
a small angle to the eyepiece won't effect it as much since
all of this light will go to the spot on the lamp that
your looking at. The binocular will spread the light a little
and there is some loss but the advantage is ease of use.

Not all of the cheap binoculars are junk. I bought some
cheapies to carry in the car ( I think I payed $17 for
them ). They were 7x21 roof prism types. When pointed at
Jupiter, I could see three of the moons. Not too bad for
cheap bino's.
