RE: ATM pipe fittings

I have a small scope (half of a smashed binocular project -- sigh)

portion. My question is how to get a good, smooth, non-binding, but

loose fit on the threads. Any suggestions?
Two options:
Wrap some teflon tape on the threads. This will provide smooth movement
when the flange is threaded onto the nipple until it is hand tight.
Put some valve grinding compound on the threads and work it in until smooth.
Then disassemble, clean up and reassemble.
