Conrady's books are quite interestings. They are quite cheap because Dover
publications picked them up (~15-18 dollars for each volume). They cover
basics of raytracing, eyepieces and objective design. Also camera lens design
and the design of microscope objectives. Pretty cool. These do predate
the use of computers and calculators (at least the electronic kind) so
be prepared to step back into the world of log tables. You won't find any
spot diagrams here, but you will find a pretty lucid description of third order
lens design, using thin lens approximations etc.... I dust mine off to
read occasionally.
