Conrady's books are quite interestings. They are quite cheap because Dover publications picked them up (~15-18 dollars for each volume). They cover basics of raytracing, eyepieces and objective design. Also camera lens design and the design of microscope objectives. Pretty cool. These do predate the use of computers and calculators (at least the electronic kind) so be prepared to step back into the world of log tables. You won't find any spot diagrams here, but you will find a pretty lucid description of third order lens design, using thin lens approximations etc.... I dust mine off to read occasionally.
