The slitless tester uses the same blade for the knife edge and one side of the slit. The other side of the slit is not necessary because the image returned from the mirror is reversed. When you use a traditional tester the knife edge covers one side of the slit, so it really doesn't need to be there anyway.

Does this make sense? Maybe someone will be able to do better.
