I really agree about the color of the LED. We've found that Green works really well and cranking up the source will get it bright enough to be seen. They are inexpensive and can be gotten frosted which saves a little work. Mine works very well in a Ronchi test. We have even tried He-Ne Lasers. they work well too, but the pattern depends on how well the emitting surface is prepared.
