Q - Cut and Paste Plate Glass

Does anyone have experience cutting large (6-12 inch) circles out of 3/4 inch plate glass? If so I could sure use some advice.

Also, is there a practical way of making a 1.5 inch blank out of two 3/4 inch blanks. Perhaps grinding the two together for a while so they mate very accurately then gluing around the edge (not between the glass) with silicone or some other adhesive?
