I hand sew caps for all of my optics from vinyl seatcover
material.  I use the cloth backed stuff as it is good and strong.
I use a canvas awl with some good stron thread to put the covers
together.  Construction is a disc for the cover and a strip for
the sides to go over whatever the tube is.  Sometimes I even hem
the edge!
Interesingly,  I've got a store nearyb that sells only upholstery
stuff and its initials are UFO.
Then again, I also like to split a block of wood in half to make
little boxes for flats and so forth.
