Hi Dan,
I design electronics for a living; you should not have much difficulty trying to find a replacement, if not an identical transistor.
Have you tried DigiKey? www.digikey.com - they have pretty much everything.
I'm in Australia, but if you email me the type of transistor and any other parts you need, I'll try to find a replacement for you.
Do you have a schematic or any other details about the drive circuit? It may help in identifying a suitable alternative.
