Hmmm... the FAQ explicitly requests that messages be posted in plain text
ASCII format, and that graphics be sent to the file upload area rather than
as attachments to the list. I don't think there's a "penalty" (except that
the message might not be displayed properly on different viewing software
or be archived in a readable form).
It's not a question of stature so much as maximizing compatibility and not
bulking up the list traffic with extra bytes of HTML-fluff that shows up as
garbage on many mail-reading programs.
In my personal opinion, HTML is for web pages not e-mail.
