The main advantage for me was weight saving in the
upper end. My mirror is only 20 lbs and I don't want
to add any counter weight if possible.
8 poles are not needed to counteract gravity in fact
only the trusses on the side are doing most of the
work in that regard. To prove that I once removed the
top and bottom trusses from an 8 pole version and
except of side to side motion it all worked very well.
You can see from the pictures that I have a hinged lid
and it does not get into the light path.
Keeping a shroud out is a little more problematic but
The new Obsession 18" UC does it quite well using a
couple of light weight ring battens inserted into the
shroud.
