Hi, Rob,

Both work well, but what tips the balance for me is
that in an 8-pole truss you have room for a hinged
mirror-box cover.  In the 6-pole arrangement the lid
bumps up against the poles while still in the light
path (unless you make the mirror box much wider than
it otherwise needs to be).  I find totally removable
covers risky and inconvenient.  If you don't mind,
then this shouldn't matter.

The geometry of the 8-pole arrangement is also a
little simpler, but that isn't such a big deal.
