I use Little Giant ladders (http://www.littlegiantladder.com/) for
viewing. They have a small metal platform which you can use to stand/sit
on. You could add whatever you want to it (board & padding) if it's not
wide enough. They fold up well and come in lots of sizes. I got one for
working on my two story house after tring to use a friends regular strait
extendion ladder by myself, it was too heavy and wobblely for me to use
alone but the little giant worked great.

I've got several I've used at the local clubs star parties, depending
on which scopes I'm bringing. Most people can't reach the eye peice on
my 8" without the step ladder and if my friend brings his 12.5", I'll need
to bring one of the taller ladders to get to the top of that scope, it's
over 8 feet tall.

If you look around you might find a local hardware store that carrys
them for a closer look, but be careful to avoid of some the cheap copies
some stores carry.

They aren't cheap (my 3-step ladder was $139 when I got it) but I think
they are worth it.

  Just a satisfied customer.
