Re: [ATM] instructions on how to add strings to a DOB
Hi Patrick,
As Dan Gray stated in his article "jane's stringtelescope" on the web
bowstring works as a tensioning material. I have used 450 plus bowstring on
my 17.5 inch dob using 3 poles to tension the strings. In the five years
since I build the telescope I have never had to recollimate the telescope
during a session, I have never noticed any stretching. To make a good string
you need to lope string several times (10 times in my case) to make a single
string. I've found the best to make strings is to copy the way archers do
this by using a bowjig. You'll have to build one. Instructions how to do
this and how to make a single string with multiple strands can be found here
http://www.mac.asn.au/string_making.htm
http://www.centenaryarchers.gil.com.au/howto.htm
http://www.cs.usu.edu/~watson/artemisiaca/bowstringhowto.htm
You will need bowstring, servingstring (usually nylon), a servingjig (best
to buy this) and a bowjig which you can build. To tension the strings on the
telescope I use small spanners that are commonly used on sailboats. The
smallest size I've been able to find is M4. If you need any additional
information I can send you some pictures off-tread.

Onderwerp: [ATM] instructions on how to add strings to a DOB
I want to add some strings to my 4 Pole DOB scope to increase its
stiffness. I have seen many pictures on the web and read about WHAT was
used, but I cannot seem to find anywhere that gives step by step
instructions on how to do it. Can anyone help me out? How are the
strings tightened? is bowstring the best material?
thanks in advance -
Patrick
