I do believe that parallel port modules are in exitance for both
Firewire and USB so that option is always available.
The other option is to make up a USB port module to do the job.
If your telescope end has the intelligence to do so, it should be
able to handle USB or Firewire ontrol directly.  I'd probably
suspect that just a jumper change or even just a software
selection at the telescope would suffice for either choice.
As I understand it, the AppleTalk system was the forrunner of the
Firewire and USB the Microcrud equivalent of Firewire and I think
that the drivers for Firewire and USB are the same chips.  You'll
hae to go look in the literature for what the differences for
each of the two systems are but that is my recollection when they
all started out years ago.
