[ATM] starting a non-profit astronomy club?

Let me apologize up front, I just have a basic question maybe someone can
point me in the right direction.

I belong to a local Astronomy Club of about 50 members.  I am wondering if
anyone knows how to get a non-profit organization started?  I know about
nothing of the process or even if it would be beneficial.  Right now I
don't believe there are any official papers for the existing club. 
Wouldn't being a non-profit organization allow us free webhosting and
several email addresses?  Are there other benefits to doing this?

If anyone could contact me off list I would be so grateful, unless this is
on topic, it kind of is ;^)  I almost every one of us in the group build
telescopes.
