He used turpentine on the lap. Maybe near the end he thought he might breath
new life in a worn out work hardened or thin lap. It made the surface of
the lap gummy and also contaminated the surface of the mirror in splotches
making the lap skid and polish irregularly.
I have done some of those Pyrex brand molded blanks like that and except for
the taper edge they are very good.
