Get a big bolt, at least 0.5" diameter and several inches long. Get the kind
with a long shoulder, then cut off the threads and the part you don't need.
Chuck it in a drill press and carefully drill a hole into the center of the
end of it for the encoder shaft. Drill another hole in from the side and out
the other side. Tap it all the way thru the bolt, and you now have a spare
set-screw hole. I recommend big set-screws, forget those tiny Allen screws.
Get a 4-40 bolt (I think that's what they call the size I used), at least an
inch long. That way you can see it when the encoder is in place, and you can
put a screwdriver on it. File the end of the set-screw flat where it meets
the encoder shaft, so that it sits firmly and doesn't gouge the shaft. Drill
the hole in the ground board a bit too small, so that you have to press (or
gently hammer) the bolt into it. Assemble. Enjoy.
