Re: [ATM] testing tunnel

Guy,

You have active ATM group. While contemplating building a huge test stand and tunnel
have you also been thinking on interferometry. Do you have some already in Chevy Chase?

Common path interferometers are not very sensitive to vibrations and since
interferograms are recorded, averaging many of them is simple method to
reduce turbulence effects. Classical Foucault depends on "live" observation
where averaging is done after lengthy data collection. Interferograms can be
recorded in rapid succession.
Interferometry will give at once data on much more mirror points over the whole
mirror, compared to the single diameter of Foucault.
You should invite Dale as a visiting lecturer for the "interferometry made easy".
He has plenty to show. I bet that after his demo you will have quite a few
interferometrists.

Regards
Vladimir.
