I had my cataracts removed 15 months ago. In my case the correction was
to 20/20 vision with much reduced astigmatism. I now live without
glasses, except for reading, for the first time since 8 years old.

The difference for me was like looking through a dark yellow filter that
had been fogged up before and clear glass after. Through the eyepiece I
could see at least 1 and a half magnitudes fainter after.

YMMV and the surgery does have risks. I don't think it should be done
until it is necessary. I determined that it was necessary when I could
no longer drive at night. Prior to the surgery I invested in larger and
larger scopes to try to maintain my viewing.

I was told that my replacement lenses are silicone.
