I did this once and had a problem. It worked quite well at first but over time it was inconsistent due to humidity changes in the wood and other factors. I had to make an adjustable mechanism for this extra pad.

Another way to reduce friction is to take 80- or 100-grit sandpaper and sand the bearings perpendicular to their direction of motion. Another way is to use silicon wax, I haven't done this so maybe someone else will tell us how.
