"Traumatic"  or "horror of horrors" is when you declare your
 mirror finished and it slips to ground and went to pieces.

Evaporation of volatiles from pitch in sealed container was
negligible because vapors were saturated and evaporation 
slowed down.

Yes you should press it, not only once at the beginning of
polishing session, but perhaps several times in between.
This is normal .
