Re: [ATM] Book Review.... sort of
They definitely have some different stuff. But I think I may have
jumped negative because of one thing in particular, which was a MOT stroke
that referred to an illustration on another page with the mirror on the
bottom. When I found the picture I forgot the text said MOT. That would for
sure be what a beginner would fall into. Some other things might just be
that I haven't tried their methods exactly as they state them. I never
change the temperature of my pitch before working. I use accented pressure
for local figuring and it works fine without doing anything to the lap,
either warming or cutting. There are some other things that I disagree with
but may be more opinion based than provable fact. (theirs and mine)
I did see a fair quantity of stuff I agree with. I had to read
Texereau a few times and do it to see all that is in there. And his figuring
illustrations take some practice to understand. Now that I have done it I
see that he has everything you need to know in there. It wasn't obvious
without the experience.
I have yet to make a perfect edge, good but not perfect. So I will
try some new things. When I get the edge right I won't need any more
techniques in my bag of tricks. I have a 16 inch plate I might start on
soon. I really want to find a 20 to 24 X 2 inch Pyrex blank. Read that as I
want to find someone who doesn't know what they have that will let me have
it real cheap. So when I do the 16 I will give some of their methods a spin.
I'll report on what I find, but don't stay up waiting...
On the atm_free group, I found an early email by Brian Crabb
concerning a method for TDE that I have used but with a slight difference.
Same stroke but with the addition of altering a facet at the edge on only
one side of the lap and using only that location on the lap to work around
the mirror. That is the one I am going to try first. The email was from
sometime in July 2002.

I have tried a couple of times to follow their advice on figuring, without
success, so far.

This brings me to the new book "A Manual for Amateur Telescope
Makers". I don't like to be negative, so I will ask a question or two. Has
anyone used the figuring techniques in this book to successfully figure a
mirror? If you did, did you find any of those methods to be wrong? Of
course you can tell I have a negative view of some of the figuring
techniques I see in there. I use some of those techniques but not for what
they do. And since I have used them for other reasons, I think I have a
grasp of what they would do. I don't think they will do what the book says
they do.
I have never seen any defect that required a figure 8 stroke to fix. With
ease, I have used straight strokes to fix anything. In one place working for
a half hour on a raised zone is recommended with no concern shown for the
