Re: [ATM] First Timer Polishing Questions

A good news / bad news update:

First, the hand-held microscope from RadioShack is brilliant! At first
I thought I had pits all over the place but eventually realized they
were remnants of the paper towel used to pat the mirror dry; they wipe
away easily. Only really found 2 "pits" right at the edge, which
actually looked like small chips from when I let the bevel get away
during rough grinding. Found one little scratch completely invisible to
the naked eye. Otherwise, the surface has no detail whatsoever, which
makes me think it is pretty well polished. I'm sure plenty of you guys
have built something similar out of various spare parts, but for $8 this
little device was a good deal for a non-techie like me. Wish I had this
from the beginning.

The bad news: The frozen pitch idea was not good ... left some serious
"dog biscuit". Even worse, actually, the shape does not resemble
anything with a name. A big hole in the center with a couple of deep
grooves emanating out from the center with a couple of hills here and
there. Kind of a shame ... previously I had a very smooth surface with
just a small TDE. Oh well, I'm assuming some patient, slow, 1/3 COC
strokes will even it all out in time. Live and learn.

Thanks,
Bob
