I use a 50X Edmund scientific pocket microscope with measuring reticle.
(You can find them on eBay)
It's more magnification than you really need, but it's handy to me able
to actually measure pit/scratch size. You can also compare a pinch of
fine abrasive to a suspect pit to see what it would take to remove it.
You can polish out a .001" scratch, but much larger is a lot of work to
remove by hand.
As you polish, look at the boundary between the polished and unpolished
edge and watch it advance.... that's a good confidence builder.
