Ken,
Doesn't the gymballed support in your drawing accomplish the same as
supporting the mirror with a rigid central post ? If the mirror has a center
hole (doesn't even need to be all the way thru the mirror) , and there's a
post epoxied or threaded through it, just the same as yours, and the other
post end is welded to the mirror cell, it will do the same thing as your
counterweight .
The mirror weight will be supported sideways by the central post, instead of
creating the bending moment by pulling down on the cell triangles.
