Too true!  The article I cited is, however, aimed squarely at telescope 
making, though not specifically at mirror cells and flex bearings where 
this thread started.  We started throwing around a bunch of stuff from 
various levels of friction theory and I wanted to point out that there 
has been some careful work done, specifically aimed at Dobsonian 
bearings, that brings both theory and good, very specific, experimental 
data, to lightrn the otherwise murky subject of tribology.

The article has some graphs of real friction vs. speed data, and 
discussions of those data that give more concrete expression of some of 
the concepts involved.
