[ATM] Misundedrstanding- language (grammar)
To all:
Hale, not Ritchey, was the philanderer, according to Osterbrock. Sometimes I
do not know how to write clearly. Osterbrock said Hale did most of his
philandering in Europe; he said Ritchey was true to his family on the citrus
ranch. Ritchey had a "built in" headwind by his somewhat sinister sense of
humor. He liked "practical jokes". I have known many people who have reacted
with a different sense of humour to practical jokes: some are enraged, (my
brother) and myself (amused). Ritchey finally bumped up against the wrong
people for his sense of humor, and odd personality, I guess. The directory
of the U. S. Naval Observatory was not amused, when, as Ritchey was moving
the 40" mirror in a sling on one of those little fork lifts, it fell FORWARD
out of the strap, onto its face. The director tried to cushion its impact by
extending his hand to try to restrain its fall; he mangled his hand
severely. Ritchey was fired, and went back to his Citrus Ranch in Azusa, to
perish into the mists of history.

P.S. They left the mirror on its face, many days, fearing the worst: but
when they turned it over, only a large (acceptable) chip was gone out of the
rim. When I was there in 1996 (scope removed from Potomac to Flagstaff)
they'd replaced the original mirror, with a new one with a with a flat spot
in its middle to facilitate collimating . But they'd not replaced Ritchey's
original quicksilver (Mercury) polar floatatinon bearing though bitching
about what the EPA made them do to make it safe; they said it leaked,
before. (They enclosed it completely in a silly wooden coffin- it sill
leaked; but here it was: 1996, anfdthey still thought it worth using).
