I wonder if the effect would be minimized if we smoothed the curve using a 
mask where the intrusion occurs (at the cost of more light loss, but it's 
still really small compared to the primary surface)

Yes, the effect will be visible, mainly (I think) as a spike on one side.  I
have a filter slide on my 450mm scope that protrudes a little into the light
path.  The extra spike is noticeable.  I ran some simulations a while ago on 
the
diffraction effect of this filter slide.  There's no explanation, but the
results are here:

If I get some time this afternoon, I can do a similar simulation of your 
setup.
I can do a simulated star test, and also calculate a comparative MTF graph.
