The ball joint with a teflon cup is a pretty low stiction joint.  The
problem with the silicone joint is that if you really have any angular
movement, the silicone pad will cause a stress on the glass which will
perform a modification to the front surface of a significant size and, if
the mirror is thin, you can very easily lose all of the supposed advantage
of the support system.
