Hollow anything generally beats the solid anything if done right for weight
to strength.
Making small diameter plywood tubes will be an interesting exercise although
Hollowood has done so in some useful sizes.
Making up square tubes is not as strong as a round tube although it can have
some higher strength in ceratin directions.
The use of wood really doesn't get you any stronger than aluminum tubing as
the wood needs more matierial and larger diameter pieces to get the same
strength as aluminum would. Steel gets you a higher strength but at a
higher weight cost unless you go to a thinner material which then gets you
into sideload problems.
