Hi Ken,

Thanks for your response.  The masonite spider I was thinking of building 
is pictured here:

It looks pretty simple, even for a new guy, but I'll trust in your 
experience.  No sense in getting frustrated on my first telescope (I'll 
save that for my second and third...)

I do like your idea of using heavy duty steel banding tape.  I think I'll 
try and scrounge some up at home depot.
