 Like Richard says, make a second tool for the pitch if you desire (and it
is somewhat recommended for the firsttimer) as it will allow you to keep on
 grinding even if you start polishing.
 I will note that many people go back to grinding in the finer grits rather
 than continue polishing when they find TDE on their mirror.  Deep scratches
 do mean a need to go back to grinding to remove them and if you're not a
 person that keeps their workspace really clean, you will probably get a
 scratch on the glass.
