RE: [ATM] Carbon Fiber for Spider Vanes

Doug,

I forget to mention the following characteristics of foam. Foam has
material that essentially fills the area behind the skin layers So once
you add the skins, don't think of it as just thin skin layers. It is then
something completely different.

Honeycomb however only has structure where the webbing is. You have cells
that are just air, no support behind the skin. The larger the cell size,
the larger the area that is unsupported. In this case, large cell
honeycomb and thin skins in combination with point source impacts would not
work well. This illustrates why foam is better for such cases and also
illustrates why some high end applications desire foam-filled
honeycomb. Honeycombs greatest attribute is that it is a core material but
it is almost entirely air, so it is the lightest form of core available.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Shane Santi
