Re: [ATM] Which tool for a 14 inch blank ?
If you are a beginner, it is very, very unwise to use your grinding tool as
the foundation for your pitch lap. This is because things sometimes go
wrong and you might need to go back to fine grinding. With a separate
foundation for your pitch lap, this is no problem: just set the pitch lap
aside (in a covered cake dish in the refrigerator with nothing touching the
pitch) and resume grinding. But if your pitch lap is built on the
grinding tool, you must destroy the pitch lap, take the risk of
contaminating the pitch, and then try to rebuld the lap with the recovered
pitch (which is always less than you need). Yes, most of the books, and a
lot of the "experts" who got their knowledge from those ancient books, will
tell you to use the grinding tool... but you are free to ignore them.
Are you any relation to Monsignor Ron Royer of St. Pancraceous School? He
was an astronomy friend of the late Tom Cave and an active variable star
observer. I heard that he retired to astronomy paradise (southern Sierra
Nevada mountains).
As for the tool, Richard has spoken.
