The diagonal is usually placed closer to the spherical mirror just to fill
the diagonal with the spherical mirror.  The closer to seeing all of the
spherical mirror, usually the better the test as the angle is larger for the
FOV.
Any curvature of the diagonal will produce errors in the image that will be
quite visible.  Any wobble in the surface shape will also cause localized
errors of the image that will show up quite nicely.
