Greg,

I built a split ring mount as my first ATM project.
It has a band of aluminum on the ring's surface.

Pictures can be seen at
http://martin.cibulski.bei.t-online.de/split_ring_mount/

The band is 2 mm thick and runs on small roller blade bearings
(22mm x 8mm). The band is tensioned at both ends and no
more glue or nails/screws are used along it.
The wooden ring was made exactly circular by rotating it along
a motorized sander.

I use the same system on my 14" Dobsonian telescope and
it works fine. There the pointing accuracy is sufficient to
find objects in a medium power eyepiece (125x)
without any mount error corrections.

Regards,
Martin Cibulski
